Easy to do Scriptionary-- YW Mutual Idea

This week for Mutual our activity is Scriptionary.  I kind of toyed around with the idea of making a gameboard or making this a bit more complicated. Then, of course, I came to my senses and made a fun, quick game of it.

Using these Scriptionary cards from Mormon Share.
The whole thing probably took me ten minutes to put together.

Here's what you need to make your own easy Scriptionary Game:
1. Scriptionary cards (strips)
2. 7 Paper bags
3. 1 die
4. Chalk/chalkboard

STEP ONE: On 6 bags write out the Titles: "Person or People" "Place" "Event" "Ordinance" "Song Title or Saying" and "Thing (s)". Then draw out six different sides of the die on each bag.  Or, you could just write the numbers 1-6.

STEP TWO: Print off the scriptionary strips, cut them out and place them in their coordinating bag.
I did change just a few of the strips to suit my needs, I changed the temple one, to our local temple.  I changed the Prophet, to our current Prophet. And I did not use the one, stand alone,"action" strip.

The seventh bag is for the discarded strips, once you're done, so they don't get re-mixed back in.

GAME PLAY:
Divide your girls into two teams.
One at a time, each girl rolls the die and picks a strip from the bag.
She has 90 seconds to draw what's written on the board.
If her team does not guess in time, the other team gets one chance to guess.
Team with the highest score at the end, WINS!

Simple Fish Valentines

I've been having an inner struggle with Valentines this year.

As per usual, I wanna hang up the towel and just go to the store and buy valentines like a normal person.

And as per usual, I also really want to just make them.

I even stood there in the aisle yesterday and gave them all the once over and came home empty handed.

The problem?

They're valentines.  They're going to be looked at, trashed, rummaged through while searching for candy-- their only redeemable quality (<-- in the eyes of a school-aged kid).

But then again...I kinda gotta make them, too.

So the DIY-er in me wins again.  At least for the preschooler, who only needs 7 cards.

I was looking around this morning, looking for just something simple that I could just print out for free and be done.

Then I came across this Tutorial by Keeping it Simple-- and before I was knew what I was doing, I was turning off the printer and getting out my craft supplies.

This simple valentine was perfect.  My daughter and I worked together side by side while listening to Disney songs.  It probably took an hour to do start to finish.

Here's how we did it!

MATERIALS
1. Sturdy construction paper
2. Bowls for tracing (large and small)
3. Pencil + Sharpie
4. Swedish fish
5. Ziploc Bags
6. Hot Glue Gun

STEP ONE:  Trace out two large circles on sturdy construction paper.
Trace a small circle in the middle of one of the large circles.

STEP TWO:  Outline that with a Sharpie.  Write out your sayings around the small rim. We used, "You are O "Fish" ally my Favorite" and "Valentine, you're a great catch!"  I wrote it in pencil, and had my daughter trace it with the sharpie.

STEP THREE:  Hot glue the large circle onto the front of the Ziploc bag.

STEP FOUR:  Open the bag and add the Swedish fish.  Hot glue the top circle piece on and cut the Ziploc bag off.  Hot Glue in between layers so all the fishies stay inside.

After I was all done it occurred to me that it would have been really fun (and probably cuter) to sew around everything, instead of using hot glue.  Ah, well, there's always next year, right?

All Done!

This cute preschooler told me she was excited to pass these out tomorrow and ask each kid which color they would like.

Happy Valentines Day!!

Picking a Christmas Card with Minted

It's that time of year again where it's time to gather up the kiddos and head outside and take those dear family pictures.  Once you check that off the list you get the joy of trying to decide which picture you like the best, but most importantly which Christmas card to choose.  My absolute favorite card company is Minted. They have the best selection with unique indie designs and even offer free addressing, which I really love!

Well, I sat down the other day perused them all and narrowed it down to my seven favorite cards.  No easy task, I assure you.

#1

# 2

#3 -- This year they offer foil pressed cards that are so lovely and shiny.

#4

#5

#6 -- Here's my second favorite card, another foil pressed card.  I almost went with this one.

Great cards, right?  But, wait, didn't I say 7?  Well, the seventh was ordered today.  I'll be happy to share it with you when it arrives (PLUS-- a little something special).

Check out Minted for more.

The Family Travels map

About a month or two before my husband and my's wedding anniversary I came across this post from Cut, Craft, Create where she shared her Personalized Photo Map

I thought it was such a good idea and couldn't wait to put my own spin on it.  My family loves to travel.  I often put our trips into little printed books and we always get magnets from where we've been.  My husband loves to look back at all the places we've been and discuss it. I knew this gift would be right up his alley.

So here's what hubby got from me this year to celebrate 9 years of bliss!

Want to make your own?

Here's how:

STEP ONE:  Gather up these supplies.

I got my map from Amazon here
I picked up a simple 24 x 36 frame from Michaels.
I printed out all 4 x 6 photos from Sams club.

STEP TWO:  Lightly trace each state out on your tracing paper.

STEP THREE: Roughly cut each traced state out.  Place each traced state onto your photo and cut out together.

For the larger states, I just used multiple pictures until that state was covered.  Another idea would be to print out the larger sizes for your photos to cover an entire state.  Texas would take an 8 x 10.

STEP FOUR:  After your state is cut out, place as many pieces of foam tapes as you need to hold your picture in place.  Place your photo in place.

Repeat with all other states.

All done!

This made a really fun gift!
My husband really loved it and all the kids love to look at it and talk about where we've been and more importantly, where we need to go next!

I had a friend ask me if when I went to Hawaii, if I was going to cut out little pictures of each of the kid's heads for the different islands-- sounds like a plan to me, ha, ha.

Project Kid-- 100 Ingenious Crafts for Family Fun

A couple weeks ago I was contacted to see if I'd like to review the book Project Kid by Amanda Kingloff.  The book looked so charming and I was excited to check it out.

When the book arrived we immediately stopped everything we were doing and sat down to pour over each page and make plans to create things together.

Once we were done discussing each page, the kids looked through each page again, proclaiming all the fun things they wanted to make.

The projects are all simple, kid friendly, and mostly made with recyclables or everyday crafts you often have on hand.

She includes step-by-step directions and lots of beautiful, colorful pictures.

My son is especially fond of this robot bank and has been begging me to make it with him.

The other day I was looking through this book, when I was struck with inspiration for my little preschool class coming up.  Our lesson topic was the city where we live.  When I saw this darling art lesson on mosaics, I quickly thought up a plan to make our state into a mosaic.

First I drew an outline of our state.

Then I added glue and torn crepe paper.

It made for a lovely Mosaic.  The bead represents where we live.

This project was simple enough for the kids to grasp, and they loved tearing and placing their torn papers.

Everyone stayed engaged and the results were so darling.

Here's how my 5 year old's (left) and 3 year old's (right) State Mosaics turned out.  They were so great!

This book is really fantastic.  I love the simple crafts, made with easy material, that the kids want to do.
For sure we'll be crafting from this book again soon.

You can pick up the book from Amazon here or from their website here.

** This book was generously gifted to me, but all opinions are my own.**

Printable Valentines for Sell!!

Remember the Star Wars Valentines I made last year?

Well, literally the day before Valentine's Day I decided to make these.

And they were super fun.

Well, we've had some free time on our hands this winter break since the POLAR VORTEX (intense, huh?) entered our part of the country.  Thus my boy had three extra days of no school.  So with that extra time we started thinking about some new valentines we wanted to make early this year.

We had so much fun last time we knew we wanted to make more.
The trouble was narrowing down what to do?

Well, why make one set of Valentine's Day cards when you can make....7?

I decided to go all out and put these in my shop, but here's a preview of some of the cards I made to give you an idea:

Up first and probably my favorite are the Peg People Avengers that I painted two years ago.

Then we have some real Action Figure Avengers.

Then I made some cards using these cute squishy dinosaurs.

Then for my Hot-Wheel-Loving younger son, I made these Hot Wheel Valentine's Day Cards.

Next up some Transformer Valentines.

It was then that I realized that everything I was making was very boy dominated.  So I decided to make some cute girl cards, too.  Enter, these adorable Little People Valentines.

Up last I used these darling Zoo puzzle pieces to make my last valentines.

Pretty darn cute Valentine's Day Cards, right?
